Sometimes opportunity knocks and I’m too afraid to answer the door, but a couple of weeks ago, I allowed him to rush in and make himself right at home.
When a group called RAW Artists contacted me about showing my photos in a pop-up gallery called Magnify, my initial reaction was to ignore the message. After some research, however, I found the group to be legitimate, with shows all over the US, as well as some in other countries, and I decided to reply. That message took me right out of my comfort zone and on a journey I have toyed with taking for a very long time…actually treating my photography as more than just a hobby. It has also forced me to do two things I struggle with…promote myself and ask for help.
The upcoming show in which I will be displaying canvases and prints of New Orleans life takes place on Wednesday, May 9, at Republic, a bar and event venue in the Warehouse District. In order for me to participate in the show, I must sell 20 tickets. I will confess that this was almost a deal-breaker for me. I mean, how could I ask people I know (and many I’ve never met) to spend money on my behalf? It was my family who convinced me to take a chance, so here I am…promoting myself and asking for your help. 🙂 I have anticipated some questions you may have regarding the event, so I’ve taken the liberty of answering them in advance.
Question: What is the event all about? Answer: Well, imaginary friend, the event runs from 7:00-11:00 and will be loaded with talent. You will be able to view the works of photographers, painters, craftsmen, make-up artists, and performance artists. There will be a dj, and the event will culminate with a fashion show. The venue is very cool, and, as with most events in New Orleans, it is certain to be a fun and entertaining night!
Question: Do I have to purchase anything at the show? Answer: Oh, good heavens no! Of course, there will be opportunities to buy items the artists are displaying, but there is no pressure. You may wish to purchase drinks at Republic’s two bars, on the first or second floor. Oh, and the event is 18+, so no kiddos.
Question: Wednesday night is tough for me, and I don’t think I will be able to make it. Is there some other way I can help?Answer: I am so glad you asked this question, Imaginary Friend! While I would love to see as many familiar faces at the event as possible (I’m a tad nervous), I understand that this particular time may be an issue for some. If, out of the goodness of your heart, you choose to buy a ticket knowing that you will not be able to attend, I will not only be your forever friend, but will also send you a 5×7 print as a token of my extreme gratitude.
Question: How do I purchase tickets?Answer: I will make that very easy for you. Simply click on the link below and you will be prompted to make a purchase. Tickets are $22, and as long as you purchase from the link, I will receive credit toward my count. The deadline for me to receive credit is Wednesday, May 2. Tickets purchased and the door will be $30 and will not count toward any participating artist.

If any of you real people have further questions, please feel free to ask in the comments here, or you can message me on Facebook or Instagram. I hope to see lots of you on the 9th, and if you’re not there, please send me some positive vibes. This area outside my comfort zone is a little…well, uncomfortable.
So proud of you for taking this leap of faith. The world needs to see your talent!
How wonderful for you! I have to check on a few things but I hope to be able to go!
